Note: This blog post may be unsuitable for children as this contains information that may be sexual in nature
Sexual temptation is an often neglected topic in the church, and most likely to be swept under the carpet and tried to be covered up.
The feeling of guilt
- comes from God
- acknowledges sin
- upholds value
- drives people towards God & his people
Shame
- comes from Satan
- acknowledges sin
- attacks values of people
- drives people away from God & the people of God
The feeling of guilt is about grace where grace is where actions are not equal to worth
Shame is about the works of a person and where actions are equal to worth
It is normal to struggle sexually
- God says we will
- Hebrews 4:15
- 1 Corinthians 10:13a
- tempation is a normal part of being a human
- We are fallen
- Romans 3:9-12
- sin is like moldy bread, even though you can scrape it off, it is still there
- We live in a fallwn world which influences us
- We have an enemy who influences us
- 1 Peter 5:8
- There is a built in desire for sex
- We have a built in desire to be loved and valued
- God has given us the freedom to choose
Sexual Sin has Consequences
- Physical
- Emotional & Relational
- Spiritual
Two Essential Tools
- Truth
- we need to not be deceived
- we need to know:
- God;
- ourselves;
- our triggers; and
- how sin works
- Healthy Relationships
- are the only way to receive love and value
- allow us to talk about ourselves with others
- allow us to confess our struggles with fellow Christians
In Summary
- Guilt & Shame
- we need to avoid being a slave to the “works” mindset and accept grace
- Be Encouraged
- it is normal to be tempted (even sexually)
- Be rebuked
- God always forgives us for our sins
- Have hope
- sexual struggles can be overcome but we need truth and love/respect
These notes are my personal notes and thoughts from the sermon presented by Colin from Beyond Egypt, a ministry for those who suffer from unwanted same-sex attraction, pornography addiction and other forms of sexual and relational brokenness.
